Congratulations you just bought a new house and everyone wants to see it! Throw yourself a house warming party so you can get friends and family through the house in one day. Here are some tips on how to throw a family friendly and budget friendly open house:

  1. Un-pack first: This is everyone’s first impression of your new home, empty the boxes and straighten up the house before you send out the invitations. The day of the party will be less stressful if you are already settled in.
  2. Electronic Invitation: Be green and frugal; instead of printing out expensive invitations, send an Evite or group email. No need to ask for RSVPs, you want people to feel like they can just “pop-in” to take a peek at your new home.
  3. Timing: Set the time of the event in between main meals, such as 1-4p.m.
  4. Use a seasonal theme: Use the season to set the stage. For example, in the summer, cut some flowers you have in your yard or go to a local farmer’s market, and put them in mason jars or beach buckets through-out the house, and use red and white checked “picnic” napkins or crisp white linens.
  5. Snacks: Your guests are coming to see the house, not to stay for the full three hours. Provide snacks and drinks that go with your theme. For summer you can have platters of sliced watermelon, seasonal berries, and pitchers of lemonade and iced tea.
  6. Entertain the kids: If you don’t want children wandering around the house, have a craft or project station either outside or in the kitchen. Craft stores and catalogues such as Oriental Trading Company have great seasonal projects the kids can take home:  picture frames, beading or coloring tote bags. Spending a little extra time and money on the kids will make you and their parents more relaxed!
  7. Send a Thank-You: Use your manners and hand-write  thank you notes for any gifts you may receive.
