Connecticut Magazine has once again come out with their article Rating The Towns in it’s November, 2009 issue. Fairfield, Westport, Wilton and Weston all stood out placing first or second in their prospective categories.

Fairfield came in first place in the cities with a population of over 50,000. Coming in second and third place were Greenwich and West Hartford. Nearby Stamford placed fourth and Norwalk placed ninth. Fairfield edged out their competition by scoring well in four of the five categories: Education, Crime, Economy and Leisure. In the category of Cost Of Living Fairfield did poorly along with Greenwich. Not surprising since this category is based primarily on the median price of single family homes purchased in 2008 and first half of 2009.

Westport took first place in the cities with a population of 25,000 – 50,000. Westport scored perfect scores for Education, Economy and Leisure. Placing second was Glastonbury and third went to Newtown. The high price of housing impacted Westport’s Cost of Living category rating. The most affordable town in this category was New London however they also posted the worst score for education.

Wilton came in second place to Ridgefield’s first in the category of population from 15,000 to 25,000. Ridgefield placed first in the categories of Crime and Leisure, while Wilton placed second in Education and Crime. Wilton’s score in Leisure kept it out of first place this year, while third place New Canaan suffered some blows at crime and Cost of Living.

Weston once again comes in second place to Old Saybrook. Weston’s high Cost of Living keeps this town from achieving first place in the 10,000 to 15,000 population category. Weston beats Old Saybrook in the Education, Crime and Economy categories. The coastal town of Old Saybrook scores better in the Leisure and Cost of Living categories. Coming in third place is Granby Connecticut.
