You don’t need to be in Manhattan to stroll into a gallery filled with contemporary art, classic landscapes, or sculptures. Westport has a thriving arts community to explore. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend your Saturday, grab some breakfast at Doc’s Café and head up Riverside Ave to begin your journey.
Just across the street you’ll find The Ross Vintage Poster Gallery. In this outpost of their New York City gallery you will find original vintage posters in every genre from the 1880’s to contemporary works.
Next, continue to Gallery 33 at 263 Riverside Avenue. Specializing in antiques and mid-century furniture, they have sculptures, contemporary furniture, and interesting decorative accessories.
A quick walk up Riverside Ave will take you to the Westport Arts Center. The Westport Arts Center’s main gallery features three to four curated exhibitions each year in contemporary art. In addition to those exhibits they have children’s classes, performing arts, including jazz and classical music performances, and literary contests.
Your next stop should be Westport River Gallery, selected for the 2008 Best of Westport Award in the Art Galleries & Dealers. They offer collections in European, American and Asian fine art, in impressionistic, realistic, abstract and modern styles.
For the last stop of the afternoon, cross the bridge over the Saugatuck River into downtown Westport and grab a light lunch at Oscar’s or coffee and a cupcake at Crumbs before heading over to the Rockwell Gallery at 15 Myrtle Avenue (Sconset Square). At Rockwell’s you will find talented local artists, as well as Raku pottery, mono prints, paintings, and photographs.
Aside from the many galleries in Westport (for a full list check out www.creativelistings.com), there is an annual Fine Arts Festival in July and rotating art exhibits at the Westport Public Libary, and Westport Historical Society.
